The Faculty of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry was established to:

  • Promote the objects of the College (as stated in the Memorandum and Articles of Association) with particular reference to the psychiatry of children, adolescents and their families;
  • Provide an organisational structure within which the study and practice of child and adolescent psychiatry can be promoted;
  • Advise the Committee for Advanced Training in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry on acceptable standards of training in this sub-specialty;
  • Advise General Council on methods and standards of continuing education in child and adolescent psychiatry (by delegation of the General Council) undertake an advocacy role on issues related to the mental health of children, adolescents and families;
  • Institute or provide conferences, lectures, seminars, symposia and discussion on relevant topics and, as appropriate, in association with other national and State organisations concerned with the developmental needs of children;
  • Prepare and submit to General Council for adoption by the College draft position statements, clinical memoranda, opinion statements and policy statements on child, adolescent and family mental health.
